Newspeak was developed for the purpose of eliminating rebellious thoughts or words. There are no negative terms in newspeak but anything considered bad is called "doubleplus ungood."
It is the philosophy that all is good. There is no evil. Big Brother is good and so are the beliefs behind it. Those living in a world that think is "doubleplus ungood" can only be those who are rebellions and are against what the party stands for. This is when Big Brother steps in and tried to make things good, rather than negative, although using negative force, they see it as something good because they are curing the "doubleplus ungood" people.
At the end of the story, someone who is so against everything in society soon becomes a follower. He will now live in a society of strict rules and newspeak. He will not think or talk negatively of the party or he will be tortured once again and possibly killed. He has learned to live in a society of "doubleplus ungood," which is considered "good" in Oceania.

1984: Part 3 Pages 295-311
Winston has cracked! Trying to avoid his worst fears, he is pushed to the point where he would do anything not to endure what was to come.
In room 101 O'Brien has strapped him down to a chair completely, where he is not able to move and has informed Winston rats will be let free to crawl over his defenseless body and face and will eat at it. Inches away he cracks and says he would rather have Julia take his place and endure what he is being put through. O'Brien, full of satisfaction then takes out Winston from the chair as he notices a change in behavior from Winston. He is slowly becoming more for the party then against it. The cage is then removed and Winston is free. He is let free where all prisoners with a change of belief go, the Chest Nut Cafe. Winston now fully believes in Big Brother and has learned to love it, even to the point where the thought of having sex with Julia is repulsive.
After all that was endured, Winston cracks at the last minute where his fear of rats would eat him. It pushed him to where he would give up Julia for another chance at life knowing fully of Big Brother. Now the question is, Does Winston truly believe and support Big Brother? Or has he accepted it in society and will just go along with it for the sake of himself?

Winston tries to believe in Big Brother. "FREEDOM IS SLAVERY," "TWO AND TWO MAKE FIVE," "GOD IS POWER." All Slogans in which Winston can't seem to fall under by believing in them.
He finds himself yelling Julia's name, knowing O'Brien will be back to torture him. He takes the risk and tries his best to keep his emotions locked up. O'Brien returns and at his arrival hears Winston say how he hates Big Brother. O'Brien soon returns him to room 101 after losing the privileges of being in a better one which had less torture involved.
Winston at this point does not care what happens to him. All he cares about is Julia. He is fully aware he will die and will not be supportive of anything Big Brother stands for or is and wants to die hating them. He is choosing not to love Big Brother.

The party can control the human mind, but it can not change the stars or even the universe. O'Brien and Winston now argue about eachothers beleifs.
Weeks have passed as Winston goes through torture. Not only is he being tortured physically, but also mentally due to the fact someone is telling him things he does not want to hear. As there talks continue, O'Brien states that everything will be good again with a cure. That cure would kill him, but also releive him from all that's bad. Everyone will be shot.
I would rather be shot than live in a society full of hate and no privacy. Let alone, Winston is being tortured making the experience much more worst. Get it over with and shoot them, and allow them to live in peace up in heaven!

Could the prison guard truly be Winston's mother? Sharing the last name Smith, the woman wonders..Can they truly be reunited once again after years of separation?
Winston is now imprisoned and is sharing a cell with several people. One in particular is his neighbour Mrs. Parsons who was thrown in for committing thought crimes. Soon after walks in O'Brien saying he was an operative of the Ministry of Love, and saying Winston knew about it all along that he was. It seems as if the Thought Police are "cracking" down all those against Big Brother and the end is near for them. O'Brien is now torturing Winston to the point where he makes him admit that he has four fingers up when he actually has 4 up.
O'Brien is convincing Winston that everything being endured is for the sake of himself and for the party. Personally I believe..with the right amount of torture it is possible to tell anyone to say anything you want..but getting them to fully respect that thought or even believe in it is a different thing. You can have anyone say anything just for the sake of ending the torture.

Wow. Who would have thought after knowing there doomed, it would have to be repeated at them that yes in fact..you would be. They soon realise a telescreen has been planted behind the St. Clemens picture frame, which ironically they were both very fond of.
Troops smash through the paperweight, shatter the glass and beat on Winston and Julia. After Winston comes to realize what is going on he notices Mr. Charington speeking, saying clean the glass off the floor.
It comes to the attention of the reader that Charington was in on this all along and Winston realizes the voices coming out of the telescreen were infact Charington himself. Charington was a member of the thought police.
This whole thing could have been preventable if Julia and Winston had just left Charingtons when they could have. They knew they would be in danger, but still stayed there. If they had left much sooner, the chances of being found were less.

The rally has gone mad. The speaker is told to change what he is supposed to say because Oceania has switched enemies and allies in war fare. The speaker is told to say Oceania has never been nor will be at war, but instead says that they have been the whole time and still are. This confuses anti-Eurasia protesters and makes them hate Eastasia.
Winston reads through Goldstein’s The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism.
It explains "WAR IS PEACE," and "IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH."
To me, WAR IS PEACE simply means that they Party believes the only way for everything to be solved is by war. In modern day, there is a lot of controversy about the troops in Iraq. Some believe they should be there, and some believe they need to abort. It is all based on ones philosophies and ideologies.
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH simply to me means not knowing will not hurt someone. If you choose not to know of something, you are not allowing it to keep you back and can continue forward with what you know or have heard. Nothing negative will stop you. It's like the expression "Through one ear and out the other."
